I help draw out key messages from environmental data and bring it to life with data visualisation
Richard German , Principal Consultant
Richard specialises in GHG and air pollution emissions from agriculture and land use, and mitigation measures to reduce these emissions. Richard’s core experience lies in compiling and reviewing emissions inventories, as well as providing training and capacity-building. He is a UNFCCC-qualified agriculture sector reviewer.
With a background in science, Richard has led Aether’s contribution to numerous literature reviews and research projects for the European Commission, European Environment agency and UK government.
More broadly, Richard is an experience data handler (especially using R, SQL and GIS), frequently leading or overseeing work to undertake detailed modelling, mapping and automation.
Selected projects include:
Agriculture sector expert reviewer for GHG and air pollution emission inventories and projections, for EU Member States under the UNFCCC and EU National Emissions Reduction Commitment Directive.
Capacity building for EU Member States to improve how agricultural ammonia mitigation is included in inventories and projections
Leading modelling future spatial patterns of ammonia and NOx emissions in the UK, to understand impacts on sensitive ecosystems
Led an Eionet report on uptake of measures to reduce agricultural GHG emissions in the EU, and contributed to a WWF report on a UK strategy to reduce reactive nitrogen emissions from agriculture
Review of carbon and sulphur emission factors for fuels, for the UK National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (NAEI)
Bottom-up rail emissions estimation and mapping in the UK using train-by-train activity data
Singapore shipping emissions inventory, leading building of an interactive emissions map viewer.
Industrial analysis for the European Commission: Decomposition analysis of drivers of LCP emissions in the EU, and modelling the impact of decreasing E-PRTR pollutant reporting thresholds on reporting coverage and burden.
Before joining Aether, Richard led the development of efficient systems for producing and disseminating national road traffic and freight statistics. He worked with colleagues and customers within and outside government to provide bespoke analyses underpinning policy development, impact assessments and cost-benefit analyses.
As a researcher in agricultural ecology and sustainability, Richard led a research project to understand the trade-offs and synergies between different aspects of agricultural sustainability, in response to differing land management.
Outside of work, Richard enjoys messing around with his two children, then relaxing with his wife once the children are in bed.

Aether, alongside project partners the Stockholm Environment Institute, the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, and Plantlife International, undertook a study for WWF of the nitrogen cycles and pathways in the UK and reviewed existing strategies and policies that could affect the balance of nitrogen in the environment.
