Aether is currently undertaking 2 projects for the Department of Energy and Climate Change to improve the way emissions are estimated in the NAEI.
The 1st project will review the data and methods to calculate the GHG emissions from alternative fuel vehicles. At present there is little information available on the levels of use and associated emission factors for AFVs and it is important that these sources will need to be are accounted for in the NAEI in the future. The project will collect information on the numbers and vehicle kilometres travelled by the different AFVs and review the emission factors available. It will then combine this information to estimate the emissions arising from 1990 and generate projections to 2030. The work will also review how other Countries estimate emissions from AFVs and make recommendations.
The 2nd project will review the UK specific GHG emission factors used in the GHGI and update the existing IPCC default emission factors used in the inventory. The aim is to validate the UK’s country specific emission factors, for example by benchmarking them against those of other EU Member States as well as the existing and new default factors of the IPCC. In addition, in order to comply with post 2015 UNFCCC reporting requirements, the UK must assess whether or not inventory accuracy would increase when new IPCC 2006 defaults replace the revised 1996 or GPG defaults presently used.
