Black carbon inventory

28 March 2013

On 21st March, Richard Claxton attended the CITEPA annual conference in Paris. The focus of this year’s conference was the topic of black carbon emissions, which have been under ever increasing focus due to its role as a short-term climate forcer, as well as being an important indicator of local air quality and the related negative health impacts that can result. Black carbon is emitted as a result of incomplete combustion of certain fuels, and main sources include diesel fuelled road vehicles, as well as domestic wood combustion.

Aether is currently compiling the UKs first black carbon inventory, which will be reported under the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution in coming years. The inventory will enable a better understanding of key sources to be developed, and help to steer policy options for reducing black carbon in the UK.
