Aether to support world-leading UK Government emissions inventory

11 February 2025

We’re thrilled to announce our continued work under the newly awarded 10-year contract for the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (NAEI).

The NAEI is made up of the Greenhouse Gas Inventory (GHGI) and the Air Quality Pollutant Inventory (AQPI). It provides estimates of annual pollutant emissions for the UK from 1970 to the most current publication year for the majority of pollutants. The data is generated via a common database system that ensures that inventory and projection emission estimates from the NAEI across all pollutants are consistent, drawing on the same underpinning activity data, emissions and emission factor data resources and hence emissions data per source, whether GHG or AQ, are based on a consistent scope and the best available UK activity and emissions data. For further information, please see: https://naei.energysecurity.gov.uk

As part of this programme, Aether will be leading:

  • The compilation of the Company Reporting GHG factors
  • Air Pollution projections
  • The Devolved Administrations inventories
  • Rail emissions
  • Emissions in the Overseas Territories & Crown Dependencies (OTCDs)
  • A new coordination group streamlining inventory work across multiple contracts under the NAEI

We’re proud to contribute to the ongoing development of this world-leading inventory programme, ensuring robust data informs climate and air quality action.
