Aether and their Dutch partners TNO are helping the Port of London Authority to develop a strategic evidence base to support London’s air quality improvement efforts. Aether and TNO will be developing an emissions inventory for all the navigable waterways in London, including the river Thames as far as Southend. The inventory will be based on cutting edge work undertaken in the Netherlands, including Europe’s largest port at Rotterdam, using real time ship and boat movements to build up a composite and complex emissions profile. This will allow the development of a realistic baseline for London river traffic emissions, the exploration of mitigation options and will feed into the London Atmospheric Emissions Inventory.
Aether, TNO and SGS, the international inspection, testing, certification and verification specialists, are also undertaking real world emissions testing for vessels on the Thames. This will assist in the development of updated shipping emissions factors, with a focus on third party tugs. The project will use internationally recognised emissions sampling protocols, applied in the context of Thames river traffic, it’s use patterns and environment. It will enable policy relevant data analysis such as the comparison of river freight journeys with their lorry based equivalent.
Both projects will support the development of a Port of London Authority air quality strategy, to be produced in the winter.
