Aether staff are currently busy working with two other consultancies to appraise all of the Local Authority Local Air Quality Management (LAQM) reports. Under the 1995 Environment Act and subsequent regulations, Local Authorities are required to review and assess air quality in their area. This requires Local Authorities to complete Progress Reports (PRs) and Updating and Screening Assessments (USAs). Where a USA has identified a risk that an air quality objective will be exceeded at a location with relevant public exposure, the authority are required to undertake a Detailed Assessment. The aim of this is to identify with reasonable certainty whether or not an exceedence is likely to occur. Once an Air Quality Management Area has been declared, local authorities must complete a Further Assessment within 12 months.
To date, approximately 250 Local Authorities have declared AQMAs across the UK. Progress Reports from all Local Authorities were due by the 30th April.
